Helicobacter Pylori Test

The term h pylori is short form for Helicobacter Pylori. This is a type of bacteria that may be present in the stomach and the upper part of the intestines. Helicobacter Pylori infection causes the lining of the infected area to be mildly inflamed. It also causes ulcers to develop particularly in conditions where the infection is prolonged. H Pylori has also been linked to stomach cancer. If diagnosed, proper medication is likely to alleviate the symptoms. The Helicobacter Pylori test is conducted on patients who have displayed symptoms of chronic digestive distress. The symptoms include indigestion, pain, burning in the gut, and a specific location of the pain to the lower stomach area.

The test procedure involves breathing out into a balloon shaped bag. This air that has been breathed out will then be measured for the various components that are present in it. This sample is known as the base sample which is used to compare with further tests as the test procedure continues. The second stage is the consumption of a drink that may taste like lemon. Once consumption has taken place the patient is made to wait for 15 minutes. After this wait, the sample of breath is taken in the same way, using a balloon shaped bag. The air in the bag will then be tested and the results compared to the tests conducted on the first sample. The test for H pylori is directed at the carbon dioxide level in the air.

The breath test for Helicobacter Pylori is limited by the patient’s cooperation. It is necessary to avoid any antibiotic medication for up to a month before such a test is conducted. If a person is on regular medication, the doctor should be consulted in order to see if this medication will interfere with the test process and what effects may occur if this medication is stopped. It is also important to avoid consuming anything including water for at least 75 minutes before the test.
