(April 1, 2010)

Coronary artery bypass graft or the CABG surgery is basically performed to help relieve the angina in those individuals who have actually failed medical therapy and thus are not recommended candidates for an angioplasty. Normally when plaque builds up in a patient’s arteries then it can lead to the narrowing and also the hardening of those same arteries. This plaque build up is caused by various factors. The main cause is cholesterol. This build up of plaque is also more often seen among smokers, diabetics and people suffering from high blood pressure. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is considered ideal for those individuals who have multiple narrowing of the arteries and  also multiple coronary artery branches. Some complications including mortality can increase with those patients who have poor heart muscle function, or older age, or have a disease obstructing their left main coronary artery, or suffer from diabetes, or have chronic kidney failure. It even includes those who have chronic lung disease.

Coronary artery bypass surgery is colloquially referred to as heart bypass. It is also referred to as coronary artery bypass graft surgery or the bypass surgery. It is that surgical procedure that is performed to help relieve the angina. The arteries and maybe the veins from a patient's body are used in the grafting process. During this coronary artery bypass surgery the surgeon has to to attach the vein or the artery that has been detached earlier from a wrist or the leg. The surgeon would need to do this above and also below the blockage or the narrowed part of the affected coronary artery. For a few people it takes more than a single bypass for the surgery to be really successful.

This surgery is attempted by the doctors when the patient’s heart has actually stopped. There are numerous techniques that are available which can be used to help the doctor perform the Coronary artery bypass graft on the patient’s beating heart. Some of the risks and also some of the complications that are associated with this kind of heart surgery includes the patients age, if he or she is suffering from any chronic lung disease, if there is severe kidney failure and so on.

Patients who have had the coronary artery bypass graft surgery are recommended to do some major lifestyle changes to prevent the reoccurrence of any blockages in their arteries. They are advised to improve their eating habits, get adequate exercise and live stress free lives.
