Are there any Preparation for Cystoscopy?

(April 1, 2010)

A cystoscopy is a test performed to examine the insides of the bladder. With the help of a cystoscope, a lighted, thin instrument, your medical practitioner will be able to examine the insides of your bladder. The cystoscope allows the medical practitioner to study areas of the urethra and bladder more closely. These areas are otherwise difficult to examine as they do not appear on an X-ray. In addition, the cystoscopy also allows your medical practitioner to remove sample tissues. The cystoscope allows the medical practitioner to insert other small, thin surgical instruments through it into your urethra. This is done to collect tissue samples for a biopsy as well as urine samples. Bladder stones and other small tumors can be removed during a cystoscopy. This helps prevent major surgical intervention that may be required for the same purpose.

A cystoscopy is performed to investigate certain kinds of urinary disorders, mainly, incontinence, hematuria, dysuria, urine retention and frequent urination, among others. In addition, the test helps locate the cause of chronic urinary tract infections, a blockage in the urethra, tumors and kidney stones. Sometimes, a cystoscopy may even be performed to insert a urethral catheter or stent that will help urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder.

If your medical practitioner has recommended a cystoscopy for you, then you can prepare for the test using the following tips. Ensure that you inform your medical practitioner about any allergies you may have before the test. For instance, you should inform your medical practitioner about any allergy to certain kinds of medications, especially anesthetics. In addition, tell your medical practitioner about any blood thinning medication that you may be taking before your test commences. Your health care center will provide you with a consent form before you take the test. Ensure that you clarify any doubts and concerns you may have regarding the form and the test with your medical practitioner before you sign the form. The cystoscopy is usually performed under anesthesia. The anesthesia may be general, spinal or local and the necessary precautions required with each type of anesthetic should be taken. If you are given a general anesthetic, for instance, ensure that you are driven home by someone and ensure that you do not eat or drink anything at least 8 hours before you are given the anesthetic. If local anesthesia is administered before the test, then you can drink and eat normally prior to the test.
