Low Alanine Aminotransferase
An alkaline aminotransferase test is conducted to determine the level of enzymes in the bloodstream. It is one of the liver function tests that are used to determine if the liver is in good working condition. Though primarily meant to test the level of alanine aminotranferase enzymes in the liver, the test is also used to measure the same in organs like the kidneys, pancreas and the heart, as well as muscles. A low level of alanine aminotranferase is naturally present in the bloodstream. The level is slightly higher than normal in children in their growing years. It is when the liver has undergone significant damage that this level rises abnormally and can be detected through this medical test. Usually, this test is conducted in conjunction with other tests to determine the exact nature and extent of the damage caused to the liver. The alanine aminotransferase test (ALT) is a good way of diagnosing liver cirrhosis and hepatitis, which are mostly caused by excessive drinking over a significantly long period of time. The consumption of certain kinds of drugs and the effect of some viruses on the liver may also be tested through ALT. It is also a good way of detecting if jaundice has been caused by a liver disorder or is simply the result of change in the balance of enzymes in the bloodstream. Also, it helps monitor and regulate the adverse effect of medicines administered to bring down the level of cholesterol in the blood may have on the functioning of the liver.
Preparation for AL Test
There are a few basic rules that you should follow before you go in for ALT. Do not engage in any form of vigorous physical activity just before the test is conducted. Certain herbal products like valerian and Echinacea may interfere with the results of the test as they can change the level of alanine aminotransferase in the blood. Thus, if you consume any herbal medicine containing these extracts, you should report it to your doctor beforehand, who might suggest that you discontinue their use for a few days before the test is conducted. Allergies to certain forms of medication should also be reported to the doctor prior to the test. Precautions might also be necessary for patients who have recently had a cardiac surgery done or are pregnant. The actual test merely involves the collection of a blood sample. The test results are generally available within a day.
