Globulin Test
While a lot of people talk about globulin tests, they might be referring to different types of test. In general, the term would be serum globulin electrophoresis, which is nothing but a blood test. It is one’s blood serum that is tested, wherein the globulins present are assessed. The term globulin is given to a variety of proteins which can be found naturally in one’s blood. Since the test involves drawing of blood from the person, the serum may be sent for analysis of globulins.
Reasons for Globulin Test
In most cases a serum globulin electrophoresis would be carried out if your doctor needs the same for diagnosis purposes. There are different cases when the levels of globulins would be required for assessment purposes so as to check for diseases and other possible disorders. The categories of such proteins may differ and can be broadly put under a range of three basic varieties and these too may be then further divided. In particular, it may be noted that there are immunoglobulins which fall under the wide categorization of globulins known as gamma globulins. To be more specific, these are antibodies and they are important. Assessment of these becomes important on account of the fact that there are certain conditions or disorders which can cause the level of these particular proteins or antibodies to rise. Since certain conditions are known to cause such elevations in the levels of these globulins, a blood test would be then deemed necessary to check for the same.
Preparation for Globulin Test
Preparation for the different globulin tests would usually necessitate the act of fasting. In most cases you would find that the fasting duration for serum globulin electrophoresis would be approximately four hours. Your doctor would be able to provide further guidance about the globulin test preparation with regards to other parameters such as medication. This would be an important factor to discuss since the results of the globulin test might be affected by certain kinds of medication.
Procedure to Conduct Globulin Test
Since the serum globulin electrophoresis or the globulin test would be like any other variety of blood test, the routine is the same. It would involve sterilization of the area and a drawing of blood such that the serum may be tested. Testing of the serum would involve specific treatment of the sample and binding of the proteins. For further diagnosis, you would be required to take the serum globulin electrophoresis results back to the doctor
