Iron Test During Pregnancy
Submitted by Nic on March 10, 2011
Iron is a mineral that is of great importance to the human body. It is listed as a trace mineral. Trace minerals are those that are needed by the body in small quantities. These quantities are almost microscopic when compared to the quantities of other nutrients required by the body. This small quantity, however, does not mean that iron is not important to the body. Iron is one of the most vital minerals needed for good health. Iron helps with the process of oxygen transport in the blood. A lack of iron in the system will result in a condition known as iron deficiency anemia. This type of anemia will cause fatigue and generally pale skin.
Pregnancy is the nine month long process where a fertilized egg develops into a new born baby. During this time, the woman’s body will undergo many important changes. Her body will also be under stress during this period. Having a low
iron level during pregnancy
can be problematic especially if it means that the mother has a chronic lack of energy. In some cases, the pregnancy itself causes the condition to develop as the body chemistry of the woman may change in such a way that it affects her ability to absorb iron properly. Therefore, women may be advised to take an
iron test during pregnancy
. An iron test during pregnancy is a simple blood test that uses a sample of blood collected from the mother’s upper forearm. Blood is collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis. Along with an iron test during pregnancy the doctor may also order other tests to establish the condition of the mother’s health. An
iron analysis during pregnancy
is necessary for the health of the growing fetus as also of the mother. See also

Another reason why an
iron exam during pregnancy
is required points to its usage in the body. Under normal circumstances, the woman may be consuming enough iron; however, during pregnancy, she will need extra iron because of the strain on her body and also because of the needs of the growing baby. This will usually be communicated to the mother during the first few weeks of pre-natal care. An
iron test during pregnancy
may also be conducted as a standard precaution just to ensure that the woman is not suffering from any condition associated with iron deficiency. It is normal for women to feel tired during pregnancy so the angle of fatigue cannot be used as an accurate judge of whether the woman is anemic or not.
