TSH Blood Test
Submitted by Nic on March 14, 2011
A blood test is any test conducted where a sample of blood is collected to analyze its contents. The
TSH blood test
is a test that is conducted to check for a specific hormone in the blood known as the thyroid stimulating hormone.
The thyroid gland is one of the important glands of the human body. It is located in the throat. The thyroid gland performs important functions associated with metabolism. There are two conditions associated with the function of the thyroid gland. When the gland is secreting too aggressively, it is known as hyperthyroidism. The opposite condition is when the gland is functioning too slowly. This is known as hypothyroidism. Because the thyroid gland is associated with metabolism, any malfunction of this gland will cause problems with the way in which the process of metabolism takes place. Thyroid problems are therefore associated with slow or fast metabolism.
The TSH blood test is a blood test used to evaluate thyroid function. The TSH blood test is used to check for problems in new born babies as well. Often, the TSH blood test is used to check what effect any hormonal replacement therapy or any thyroid related medication has had. Thyroid related problems can create havoc with an individual’s quality of life which is why one may need to use the TSH blood test to check if there is any problem which can then be addressed accordingly. The
TSH blood test results
are useful for a diagnosis of what problem is affecting the thyroid gland. High TSH blood test results indicate that the gland is suffering from some sort of failure. This is because the body keeps trying to stimulate the thyroid gland to function normally. Low
TSH blood test levels
indicate excess thyroid gland function. In this case, the body will stop trying to stimulate the gland as it will find that the gland is secreting excessively. It is therefore necessary that the
TSH blood test normal range
be maintained.
In some rare cases, the pituitary gland may be damaged which would explain why the high or low results are being noted. This problem may be suspected when the patient is experiencing symptoms of one type of thyroid problem but has tested in the opposite way, that is, with results that indicate a thyroid problem of the opposite scale. The TSH blood test is conducted in a matter of minutes as far as the patient is concerned because blood drawing is a simple process. In case you have any doubts on the preparation for the test, its after effects as also the
