Hematology MCH Test
Submitted by Nic on April 11, 2011
Hematology
is the branch of medicine that deals with the blood and with the organs and body systems associated with the production of blood in the body. Blood is used as an agent for the transport of many different substances around the body. Blood is also used to provide the body with a defense system against infections and diseases. Blood is also responsible for the supply of nutrition and oxygen to various parts of the body. The oxygen carrying capacity of the blood is associated with hemoglobin which is found in the red blood cells. The red blood cells make up between a third and half the amount of blood in the body by volume.
The
hematology MCH test
is conducted to check for a value known as Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin. This value determines the amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell in the blood. Hemoglobin is important for oxygen transport and is therefore required in a certain range in the blood. The
normal range
for the hematology MCH test is between 26 and 33 picograms of hemoglobin per red blood cell. Doctors prefer when an individual displays results that are within the range, closer to the middle of the range.
The
MCH blood test
is usually a part of a series of tests conducted on a single sample of blood. This type of test is known as the complete blood count test which is often abbreviated as the CBC test. This test is used to determine a whole bunch of information about the status of the blood. This information together helps to determine what the state of the individual’s health is like.
When the
hematology MCH test
has a
high
result, the patient may be suffering from a variety of conditions including microcytic anemia. This is a condition where the size of the blood cells is larger than normal. The opposite condition may occur when the
hematology MCH test
has
low
result or the individual is suffering from iron deficiency or folate deficiency, both of which will affect the amount of hemoglobin in the blood. This type of deficiency will lead to increased fatigue as the individual will not be able to sustain long periods of effort because there is insufficient energy production in the body. Energy production, as mentioned above, depends on nutrition and oxygen. A deficiency of either of these components will lead to low energy levels and all the health problems that come with that. It is therefore necessary that the body maintain the
hematology MCH level
.
