Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve of the eye. This nerve is the major nerve in our eye. Glaucoma slowly and gradually does result in complete blindness. The person suffering from the condition may or may not show sings and so would need to take perfect care of their eyes. Glaucoma disease is the leading cause for permanent blindness. A survey has shown that as many as 6 million people in the United States have been affected with this disease. The people who are with glaucoma do not recognize it as there are no initial symptoms and the symptom of subsequent loss of side vision can hardly be recognized. Glaucoma test results may vary because of the spread of the glaucoma disease.

Most eye test results only test your centre of the eye vision however the side vision is not tested. Thus even if a person goes for this kind of eye test and has glaucoma, the disease would still not be detected as the persons centre vision is fine. However science has advanced today and there are automated field analyzers that can detect glaucoma at an early stage. Tonometry, Ophthalmoscopy, perimetry, and Gonioscopy are a few basic of glaucoma test results that would help diagnose this condition. When a Tonometry test is done it is to test the inner pressure of the eye. In Ophthalmoscopy the doctor uses and magnifying glass which has a light at the other end. The doctor then looks into the person eyes and checks the retina, the optic nerve, blood vessels and back of the eye.

The ophthalmology test results are then made and treatment for any condition detected could begin right away. In perimetry you would have to indicate when light passes your side or peripheral vision, this is done when you are looking straight. Gonioscopy is basically to check if the place where the iris intersects with the cornea is open or closed has glaucoma present. Also there is slit lamp, which can be used, but this is to get a clear view of the surface of the eye. Ophthalmology deals with the study of structure, disease and functioning of the eye. One thing a person should know is that Glaucoma is not curable however if detected at an early stage the spreading of the disease to the rest of the eye can be stopped. It is believed that the pressure on the eyes is the main cause for glaucoma. Hence try and avid it by using anti-glare spectacles especially for those who use computers a lot.
