Almost every woman has experienced the pain of missing out on something close to her heart simply because she was experiencing very heavy periods. Research shows that one in every five women experiences painful and heavy menstrual cycle, which prevents her from participating freely in her daily routine.

Novasure endometrial ablation is the answer to such problems. Known for being one of the most efficient methods of endometrial ablation, novasure offers quick and safe riddance from heavy periods that disrupt your life. It is a safe and approved method of destroying the endometrial lining so that you no longer have to deal with very heavy and painful menstruation. The novasure method uses a thin folded electrode array, which is inserted into the uterus through the vagina. The array unfolds and spreads to conform to the shape of the uterus. Radiofrequency energy is then passed through the electrode to the tissues, thus destroying the endometrial layer. After the endometrial lining is desiccated, the electrode array is then folded back and retracted.

Procedure

The novasure procedure is often preferred over others because it has an in-built proactive safety test. This is known as the cavity integrity assessment test in which a small amount of carbon dioxide gas is released into the uterus to verify the integrity of the cavity. If the doctor or the technician feels that something is not right, they can immediately withdraw the electrode and stop the procedure.

Side Effects

As with any other medical procedure, novasure endometrial ablation has some potential side effects that should be considered before you opt for the procedure. Novasure is specifically designed for premenopausal women, especially those who experience very heavy periods.

Endometrial ablation is not suitable for women who are still in their child-bearing years or those who are considering future pregnancies. After novasure endometrial ablation has been performed, a woman may have difficulty conceiving, and therefore, it may not be the best idea to have this procedure if you plan to have children in the near future. A pregnancy following endometrial ablation can be really dangerous and should be avoided.

One of the most common side effects of this procedure is prolonged or heavy bleeding immediately following the ablation. If the procedure is not performed properly, you may experience perforation of the uterine walls, infection or thermal injuries. Some other temporary side effects include brief bouts of nausea and vomiting, cramping, spotting or mild to heavy discharge.

Considerations

Women who have any infections in the pelvis or genitals should not opt for this procedure as there could be complications and side effects. If you have a metal uterine implant or an IUD device, do not opt for this procedure. Women who suspect uterine cancer or have been diagnosed with it, should also avoid having this procedure done. It is important to understand that novasure is not a sterilization process and you may still get pregnant after the procedure.

CPT Code

The CPT code for novasure endometrial ablation is 58353. You can use this code for insurance purposes or for lab testing or other medical compliance documents.

Cost

The cost of novasure endometrial ablation ranges from $500 to $1200, depending on the kind of surgery and the time taken to recover in the hospital. A major part of the cost goes towards the hospital stay for recuperation. This cost is usually fully covered by insurance companies.

Recovery

The recovery from endometrial ablation does not take a very long time. Since the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, you may be asked to rest in the hospital till the effects of the anesthesia wear off. The doctor may ask you to stay in the hospital for longer and remain under observation. You may experience some light bleeding for a few days after the procedure.
