STDs or sexually transmitted diseases are infections that can spread from one individual to another through sexual contact. These diseases can affect sexually active individuals at any age. The incidence of STDs is higher among teenagers. STDs can pose serious health problems and if left untreated can even result in permanent damage in some cases. Infertility and contraction of fatal illnesses such as HIV and AIDS can also occur.
Spread of sexually transmitted diseases is believed to occur only through sexual intercourse. However, an individual can acquire an infection even through skin to skin contact. Contact with infected areas or sores can lead to transmission of STDs such as genital warts and herpes. STDs can also be transmitted through anal and oral sex. This is due to the fact that the infecting bacteria and viruses can penetrate the body through cuts and skin tears in the anal and mouth area also. These diseases tend to spread quiet easily and in many cases it is not even possible to know if an individual is infected. Many individuals may also contract an infection and not know it themselves. As such these individuals can unknowingly spread the diseases to other individuals during sexual contact. Certain activities are known to increase the risk of developing STDs. When sexual activity begins at a young age, the individual is at a greater risk of contracting STDs. Those who have multiple sex partners are also prone to developing an infection. Even if sexual intercourse does not take place, intimate contact is enough to enable transmission of infection. Engaging in unprotected sex can also significantly raise the likelihood of developing STDs. Latex condoms can greatly reduce the chances of contracting infection. They however are not 100% safe and guaranteed guard against contracting STD’s
Preventing STDs is much easier than treating them. Abstaining from any type of sexual contact with individuals that may have STDs is important. Using a condom during sexual intercourse also helps to reduce the chances of developing STDs. It is also recommended that individuals that are considering engaging in sexual relations must undergo genital examinations. This will help to clear doubts and also aid in the early detection and treatment of STDs. Such examinations are necessary for all types of sexual contact such as vaginal, anal or oral sexual contact. Also if you suspect that your partner may be affected by an STD, it is advisable to seek medical consultation immediately. There are also local clinics where one can get an exam done confidentially.
