What is a Herniorrhaphy Procedure?

A herniorrhaphy procedure refers to a surgical procedure, which is used in the treatment of most of the problems that stem from a hernia. It can be described as a specific surgical strategy in which the hernia is repaired with the help of a series of sutures and incisions. A hernia is a very common medical problem that can occur due to several reasons, including genetics or even strenuous activities like weight lifting. It can be described as a protrusion of tissues or maybe even internal organs of the body, through an area of muscles.

This problem is usually seen in areas of the abdomen or the stomach. There are different types of herniorrhaphy procedures, which can include the inguinal herniorrhaphy procedure and umbilical herniorrhaphy procedure.

Inguinal Herniorrhaphy

An inguinal herniorrhaphy procedure is performed when a protrusion of the abdominal cavity is seen through the inguinal cavity. In fact the repair of the inguinal hernia is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. There are two types of inguinal hernias; one is the direct one and the other is indirect. In case of a direct inguinal hernia, the contents of the abdomen herniated through the superficial inguinal ring, whereas in the indirect hernias, the protrusion is through the deep inguinal ring. On its own, inguinal hernia is not dangerous; however, it can lead to certain complications, some of which can also be life threatening. Moreover, an inguinal hernia does not really go away on its own, without being treated.

Umbilical Herniorrhaphy

On the other hand, a person suffers from umbilical hernia, when a part of the intestines is seen protruding through the muscles in the abdomen. Although umbilical hernia can occur in adults too, they are a lot more common in children, especially infants. The hernia usually becomes more evident when the child cries. This is a fairly harmless condition, which gets resolved on its own by the age of 1, or perhaps a bit longer. However, in case the hernia does not disappear by the time the child reaches the age of 4, then the umbilical herniorrhaphy procedure may need to be performed, in order to avoid any complications.

Not all people who suffer from a hernia need to go in for a herniorrhaphy procedure. Hence, as soon as the symptoms of a hernia become evident in a person, it is absolutely essential to consult a doctor and seek advise on whether the herniorrhaphy procedure is required or not.
