An antisperm antibody test is used to detect special types of proteins or antibodies in the blood that attack a man’s sperms. The test is conducted by collecting a sample of the sperm and adding a substance to it which binds only to the sperm that is affected. The immune system feels threatened by the semen and believes it is an invader and, therefore, produces antibodies in order to kill it. Production of these antibodies is dangerous as they can kill the sperms or affect their motion because of which they are not able to reach the egg. Men are also prone to develop antisperm antibodies and those who have had a testicular surgery or suffered from an injury are at a greater risk to develop this disorder. This test is debated on its usefulness as many believe that the test result is not able to bring out any change in its treatment.
Antisperm Antibody Test Reasons
The antisperm antibody test is primarily done to diagnose the reason for infertility. Infertility refers to the inability of a woman to conceive despite having unprotected sex for over a period of 12 months.
Antisperm Antibody Test Preparation
There are no special preparations required before the test but it is advised that you consult your doctor in case of any queries. Men may be asked not to release their sperm that is ejaculate two days before the test and also need to keep note that they do not go without ejaculation for more than 5 days before the test.
Antisperm Antibody Test Procedure
In case of women the test is carried out by taking a blood sample from the vein with the help of a syringe or by pricking the tip of the finger with a sharp needle like instrument. On the other hand, for men, a sample of their semen is collected which is done by allowing them to masturbate after the blood and vaginal fluid samples have been taken. Make sure you wash yourself well after collecting the semen. You need to know that you cannot use condoms or lubricants while collecting the sample and also cannot collect it by having sexual intercourse as the sperm would contain the vaginal fluid too. If you are collecting the sample at home, ensure that you get it to the laboratory within an hour while you keep it at body temperature and away from direct sunlight.
