CRP Test - CRP Test or C Reactive Protein Test, Reasons and Elevated CRP Levels
CRP Test A CRP test or a C reactive protein test is given to a patient to asses symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and pelvic inflammatory disease. The CRP test is basically a screening test which is used to check for the CRP levels in those who are symptomatic of the above mentioned diseases. In fact, the test may also be done on people who may appear to be healthy, since the symptoms of many of these diseases are experienced after the disease has caused some extent of damage.
Reasons for CRP Test A more sophisticated and sensitive CRP test may be ordered to screen apparently healthy people for cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases.
The CRP test is a simple screening test, and does not give very specific results. However, the test serves as a marker for inflammatory conditions and infections which are not otherwise visible. The results of this test can alert medical professionals for further treatment of the conditions.
CRP is a protein that may inadvertently increase inflammation in severe cases. Therefore, the test is done when acute inflammation is suspected. For instance, the test may be recommended after a person has received surgery and there is a risk of infection.
The test may also be ordered to evaluate inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The test may also be conducted in order to find out the efficacy of the treatment which may already been given. The wound healing in those who have received deep wounds, cuts, burns and organ transplant may also be evaluated using this test.
Elevated CRP Levels An elevated CRP level suggests the presence of an acute infection inside the body. It is also suggestive of acute inflammation due to infection or injury. If the levels are higher but there is a drop in the levels in subsequent tests, it means that either the infection is subsiding or the treatment being given to you is working. It simply means that you are getting well and the infection or inflammation is reducing.
The CRP levels may also be elevated when a woman is pregnant and is close to giving birth. Those women who take birth control pills may also have increased levels of CRP. Those undergoing hormone replacement therapy and those who are obese may also have high levels of CRP.
CRP testing is today a common and convenient process. CRP levels fall very quickly when you receive successful treatment.
