What Is The Difference Between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a term that, when broken down, means the abrasion of the skin. This is a process where one or many layers of the skin are removed using a mechanical technique or a laser technique for abrasion. The purpose of dermabrasion is almost always purely cosmetic. In some cases, the cosmetic argument may be extremely strong, particularly if the procedure is being used for an offensive looking scar. In most other cases, dermabrasion is used to remove minor imperfections or blemishes on the skin. Microdermabrasion is a slightly different application of the same process. The difference between dermabrasion and microdermabrasion is the fact that the process of microdermabrasion is less aggressive. The applications of dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are also different. Dermabrasion is applied for blemishes and scars whereas microdermabrasion is applied to skin to make it look more youthful and healthy. In many ways, one can say that microdermabrasion is a form of mechanical peel for the skin.

The differences between dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are even more evident when it comes to the recovery period. Microdermabrasion is a process that lasts less than an hour and has no recovery time whatsoever. Individuals who undergo microdermabrasion may need to use additional sunscreen for the first few days after their procedures, but that is it. Dermabrasion on the other hand requires the use of ointments and, possibly, bandages to cover wounds created during the procedure as they heal.

When one understands the dermabrasion and microdermabrasion difference, it becomes pretty clear that these two procedures are targeted at different individuals and serve different purposes. Microdermabrasion works on the top most layer of the skin to remove this microscopic layer. The layer below it will most likely be untouched by the environment and will therefore appear fresh and youthful. This is suitable for many people who wish to appear at their best during important social functions. An individual who undergoes a dermabrasion procedure will most likely have to avoid work and socializing altogether for a few days as he or she recovers from the procedure. Anesthesia is also needed during the process of dermabrasion as this procedure can be exceptionally painful. Both techniques of dermabrasion and micro dermabrasion for acne scars removal could be used. However the intensity of the condition would first need to be monitored.

The preparation required for a dermabrasion procedure is also far more extensive as the doctor will need to perform a number of tests to check if the individual is capable of handling the medications that are given before, during and after the procedure.
