Urine Test Before Surgery
Submitted by Medical Health Test Team on August 4, 2010
Urine Testing Before Surgery
Among general health checkups, a urine test is one of the most important tests. A urine test is able to show a doctor various aspects of the person’s health. This is because urine is a waste product of the body. When blood passes through the kidneys, the waste products and toxins are eliminated from it through filtration. This eliminated waste is then transferred to the
urinary bladder
where it waits for evacuation. Because urine is a waste product, it is filled with various toxins and wastes that may otherwise not be detectable in the bloodstream. These toxins and particularly these waste products may be diagnostically relevant.
When the body is suffering from an illness or disease, the waste in the urine may be significantly different. It is possible, for example, that the urine might contain some
albumin
in it. This is a sign of impending kidney failure or kidney problems. A
urine test
is also very simple, making it easy to perform. The ease of testing is vital when one is considering illnesses and diseases that otherwise require invasive tests to be diagnosed.
There are many different types of surgery that are conducted on human beings. These are conducted either to repair damage within the body or to remove objects that are dangerous such as tumors. Surgery is an invasive procedure which generally requires the patient to be under sedation. Surgery also causes some amount of shock to the body. Because of these factors it is necessary to conduct a urine test before surgery. The
urine test before surgery
is helpful in revealing what the patient has recently consumed. Some patients may have consumed medications or illegal drugs which interfere with the procedure of surgery. Sometimes, the medication used for anesthesia may cause a serious reaction if it is mixed with any of these illegal substances. A urine test before surgery is therefore conducted as both a diagnostic and as a precautionary procedure. This ensures that there is no hindrance to the procedure. A urine test is also conducted because of the possibility of using it as a diagnostic tool for many underlying conditions. Many patients may not be aware of an infection or disease that they are suffering from because of the lack of or the weakness of symptoms. Diagnosing and treating such a disease or infection is essential prior to surgery because it changes all the parameters associated with the patient.
