KOH Test for Viruses

Submitted by Nick on November 12, 2010

The KOH test is a test which uses a substance known as potassium hydroxide. The chemical name of this substance is KOH which is why the test is called the KOH test. The KOH test for virus does not exist. It is in fact a test used for fungal infections rather than viral infections and so KOH test for viruses is not a possibility.

There are many different types of fungal infections that can affect an individual. Some of these are related to the skin and manifest themselves in the form of various skin conditions. Ringworm and candidiasis are common conditions that are caused by fungal infections. When these skin symptoms occur, it is important for testing to be conducted. This testing will be useful in establishing the type of fungus that has caused the infection. When the type of fungus becomes clear, its treatment becomes much easier.

The KOH test for fungus is conducted using a sample of skin tissue from the affected area. This sample is scraped off the skin. The skin may need to be cleaned after the sample has been removed. It may also need to be treated with antiseptic to make sure that the further infection does not take place as a result of the open wound. The sample tissue is then placed on a slide and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

In the laboratory, the KOH test for fungus is conducted by introducing a diluted mixture of KOH to the sample. This mixture is allowed to interact with the sample for a period of about 10 to 15 minutes. Once this is complete, the sample may be treated with some sort of stain. The stain will make it easier for the fungi to be visible when analyzed under a microscope. The stain used may be fluorescent if there is a fluorescent microscope available. When this is complete, the sample will be diagnosed for the type of fungus found in it. If there is no fungus present, then the sample will be noted as negative for fungal infections. If there is fungus present, then its type will be identified so that treatment options can be explored. See also KOH test for candida

For the patient, the KOH test for fungus is extremely easy. The patient has to be present for the sample collection process only. This means that the test is conducted on an outpatient basis and the subject would be allowed to resume normal daily activities immediately after providing the test sample.
