LH Test - Comprehensive Information on LH Test, Reasons, Preparation and Procedure to Conduct LH Test

LH Test

LH test means a luteinizing hormone test. This test is done to measure the level or amount of luteinizing hormone in a urine or blood sample. This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland. The LH is known to control the ovulation and menstrual cycle. The amount of LH in a woman’s body keeps changing with the various phases of the menstrual cycle. The amount of LH increases quickly before ovulation, especially midway through the ovulation cycle, and this phase is known as an LH surge. In males, the LH is known to increase the production of testosterone that is vital in sperm production.

Reasons for LH test

The luteinizing hormone test is done for several reasons. This test can determine the reason behind a couple’s inability to start a family.

•    Through the test the doctor can check a woman’s ovarian reserve or egg supply and a man’s sperm count.

•    Physicians can evaluate menstrual problems like irregular periods and total absence of periods, which is known as amenorrhea.

•    The LH test is done to find out if a woman has undergone menopause.

•    Doctors can find out if a child is undergoing early puberty, a condition that is termed as precocious puberty.

•    If someone has delayed puberty and his or her sexual organs haven’t started developing, then the LH test is beneficial.

•    Home urine tests can be done to check when a woman is ovulating.

•    Find out how a woman is responding to medicines that have been prescribed to stimulate ovulation.

Preparation for LH Test

You need to tell your doctor about any medicine that you’re taking. Some medicines can change the results of the LH test. If you are on birth control pills, the doctor may ask you to stop taking them as these pills contain progesterone and estrogen.

Before the LH blood tests and the LH urine test, you need to tell your doctor about all the medicines that you’ve been taking or if you’re undergoing any sort of treatment.

If you’ve undergone a test in the past week that used radioactive substances, then tell your doctor about it. You must also inform the doctor about the first day of your last period.

You can also discuss your concerns about the test.

Procedure to Conduct LH Test

There are two types of tests – one is a LH blood test, and the other is a LH urine test.

•    LH Blood Test: This test is carried out by drawing blood using the standard procedure.

•    LH Urine Test: A sample of the patient’s urine is collected and tested to check if the woman is ovulating.
