Fertility Testing At Home

Home Fertility Testing

Fertility is defined as a person’s ability to conceive. For men, fertility is related to the presence of, and the motility of sperm in the semen ejaculated during sexual activity. For a woman, fertility involves the maturation of an egg in the ovaries which is then released into the fallopian tubes where conditions are favorable for fertilization. Many couples plan their offspring and adjust their sex lives based on whether they want to conceive or not. When couples come to the stage where they wish to conceive, then fertility tests may be used to determine the best time for sexual intercourse. Many couples use fertility tests after their efforts to conceive have been fruitless.

There are many at home fertility test kits available at medical stores to conduct fertility testing at home. For men, at home fertility tests can only judge the density of a semen sample. A denser sample is likely to contain more sperm whereas a less dense sample is likely to contain less sperm. This test does not check the motility or health of the sperm and neither does it test whether the sperm are in fact alive.

Home Fertility Testing For Women

For women, at home fertility tests are varied. A woman’s menstrual cycle is controlled by various hormones that tend to fluctuate throughout the month. These hormones include Estrogen, Progesterone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The level of Estrogen rises before ovulation. Some home tests use the Estrogen level as their marker for fertility. One of these tests uses a saliva sample and a home microscope. The saliva samples of the woman are regularly examined by the couple to detect fern like formations in the saliva. When estrogen levels rise, the quantity of the fern like formations become more visible. This indicates the impending release of an egg from the ovaries and when this happens, sexual intercourse should be frequently practiced. Other home tests use urine samples for the Luteinizing Hormone. The surge in the level of LH occurs just prior to ovulation. This LH surge is represented by the changing of the color or pattern on a home fertility test stick which has a urine sample on it.

When a period of fertility has been established, couples who wish to conceive must engage in regular sexual intercourse. Frequent intercourse should be followed by a period of rest so that the semen can flow into the woman’s uterus and then further into the fallopian tubes. Often, it is the rapid resumption of daily activities that causes infertility amongst women.
