What is a fertility test?
(September 30, 2011)

It is a well-known fact that it could take a while for a normal and healthy couple to conceive, after they stop using any form of protection. However, in case you and your partner have not been able to conceive in spite of having frequent unprotected sex for more than a year, you may be advised to go in for a fertility test.
What is a fertility test?
A fertility test can be described as an exam carried out for the evaluation and perhaps even the treatment for fertility related problems. Through a fertility test, your doctor will try to analyze the factors that are preventing you and your partner from conceiving. Many people believe that a fertility test is only carried out for women, but that is not necessarily true. Studies indicate that in 30% of the cases, couples have difficulty conceiving because of problems related to men.
Fertility test for men
A medical fertility test for men is conducted by an urologist. The main part of a male fertility test is semen analysis. The man needs to provide a semen sample, which is evaluated in a lab. For best results, the test should be performed twice, on two different days. In addition to the semen test, the urologist may also carry out a physical exam, blood work and STD testing. Men are also asked for information about their family history, medical history, use of drugs, exercise habits, smoking habits and so on, to get a clearer idea of what the causes of infertility could be.
Fertility test for women
A gynecologist or a reproductive endocrinologist may carry out the fertility test in women, through a physical exam, blood work, hormonal tests, ultrasounds and STD testing. Just like in the case of men, women too need to provide details about their family and medical history, use of any drugs in the past as well as lifestyle and dietary habits.
There are many fertility test kits easily available for both men and women. These kits usually cost a lot less than a medical test conducted by a professional. However, home tests are not always 100% accurate; moreover, they do not really determine the cause of the problem. In case the fertility test kit you use indicated a problem, you need to consult a doctor without any delay.
Of course, it is not necessary that either you or your partner is suffering from fertility problems in case you do not manage to conceive within a year of trying. Several couples have conceived without any help or assistance in the second or perhaps even third year of trying, even though they are suffering from no infertility problems. Nevertheless, it is advisable to undergo a fertility test as soon as you suspect that there may be a problem. Early detection and treatment of infertility problems can improve the chances of conceiving to a great extent.
