How do I test for amphetamine?
(March 9, 2010)
|
Amphetamine is a psycho stimulant drug that is increases energy and attentiveness but reduces appetite and fatigue.
Earlier, amphetamine was used to cut one’s appetite and help in weight loss. Today, it is used as a stimulant, to treat Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is also used to cure other conditions like - symptoms of traumatic brain injury, the daytime drowsiness symptoms of narcolepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. It can be used as a performance enhancer too.
Amphetamines can either be taken orally, or can be injected and their effects are similar to cocaine, but their duration is longer. While cocaine can be removed from the brain quickly, amphetamines remain in the central nervous system longer. A large percentage of the drug remains unchanged in the body, prolonging the stimulant effects.
There are 5 main types of drug tests. You can test for amphetamine, through any of the following:
Blood testing: This is the most expensive, but also the most accurate method of testing for amphetamine in your blood.
Urine testing: There are numerous home drug-test kits that you can use. Most of these simple urine test kits are inexpensive and are used by courts, rehabilitation centers and employers and can detect consumption mainly within the past week or so. While a urine test can be conducted at home, you may require lab verification, for accurate results.
(In order to pass a urine test, you need to stop taking amphetamine for 2 - 5 days, before you take the test. Most pills and powders are water soluble, which means that they do not stick to anything inside your body and will rinse out naturally in 5 - 6 days. Also drink a lot of water and cranberry juice and urinate as frequently as possible.)
Hair testing: Hair tests are a lot more expensive than urine tests and can detect consumption over a longer period. However, it usually does not detect use, within the past one week. A brief period of abstinence from drugs, do not usually affect the results of the test. This test requires a sample of multiple strands of hair, about 1.5 inches long.
Saliva testing: Saliva tests are more expensive than urine tests, but less than hair and blood tests. They are quite common and are easy to conduct, but you will require lab processing, to ensure accuracy. These tests can detect use mainly, within the past few days.
Sweat testing: This test is not very common and is controversial in terms of accuracy, because it is believed that surface contamination can cause false reading.
